The pixie haircut is back, just in time for summer!

The pixie haircut made its mark back in the 50’s in Hollywood on Mia Farrow (Rosemary’s Baby) and Audrey Hepburn (Wait until Dark.) They made such a hit of the pixie haircut that virtually all Mother’s of that era ran their little girls to the beauty salon (sometimes to the barber shop) to get their little darlin’s the easiest maintenance cut of the summer!

“Pixie Haircut is Back”I’ve spoken with literally hundreds of women who, back in the 50’s, were forced into wearing the pixie haircut, my two sisters and I included. Most of us went kicking and screaming into the hair salons, knowing it was going to be yet another summer we were going to look like boys!

On top of that, most families had an at home ‘barber kit’ which was used to ‘keep up’ the pixie haircut for months to come. Yikes! Need I say more?  At least there were lots of funny looking kids running the neighborhoods with short, crooked bangs (not the asymmetrical type we may covet today) so you never felt alone in your misery!

Fast forward to today’s pixie haircut… cute as a bug now and still the simplest haircut to deal with in the hot summer months!  Pixie haircuts look best on women with oval and heart face shapes and nice bone structure. Some hair stylists call Rihanna’s do a pixie haircut, some call it a ‘crop haircut,’ but it’s not the same as the pixie haircut of say Pink’s cut below!  Get the idea?

We got some advice from stylist Ron Wehringer, “It takes 6 to 10 ponytails of donated hair to make one wig for a cancer patient or alopecia sufferer.”

Here are some steps to get started:
1. Choose your charity. There’s many to choose from, and there’s guaranteed to be one closest to your heart!

2. Ensure your hair is the right length, or grow it there. Hair only grows about half an inch a month, and the average length of hair accepted is between 10 and 12 inches long. Highly processed hair is often a problem to donate.

3. Have your stylist do it for you. Just be sure to follow all the directions given by your chosen charity. If you don’t, they might not be able to use it. And try to not take it personally if they aren’t: Not everyone can donate. The best hair for donation is clean, unprocessed and more than 10 Inches in length. Gray hair, dreadlocks, permed or bleached hair is not accepted. The hair must be either in a ponytail or braid when cut and remain that way when shipped. Loose hair, such as that trimmed and swept up, is not acceptable.
